ANTI-CORRUPTION COMMISSION LAUNCHES NATIONAL ANTI-CORRUPTION STRATEGY (NACS) - 2008-2013

The Anti-Corruption Commission
(ACC) on Monday 19th May, 2008 launched the new National
Anti-Corruption Strategy (NACS) 2008-2013. The ceremony which took place at the
British Council Hall at Tower Hill Hall in Freetown saw many high profile dignitaries in
attendance including His Excellency the President, Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma and
Vice President, Mr. Samuel Samsumana amongst members of the diplomatic and
consular corps and other members of government and civil society. The ceremony
was chaired by Mrs. Jamesina King, Chairman of the National Human Rights
Commission.

Anti-Corruption Commission arrests 12 Government Officials

The Sierra Leone Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) issued a press release on Thursday 6th March, 2008 stating that the Commission has arrested 12 officials of the Customs and Excise Department of the National Revenue Authority (NRA) and one police officer for various offences under the Anti-Corruption Act 2000 (as amended). The 13 officials are currently in police custody assisting the Commission with its investigation.

High Court Throws Out SLPP's Motion for Injunction

Justice Mary Sey, presiding judge
of Freetown’s High
Court No. 2 on Monday 17th
September 2007 ruled that the Court cannot hear the injunction
motion filed by counsel representing the Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP)
because according to the judge, there was no affidavit of service. The Judge
stated that the complainant have failed to follow the rules and procedures that
should be used in filing a motion in the High Court of Sierra Leone pursuant to
Order 18 Rule 6 of the High Court Order 2007.

Sierra Leone holds first debate between contesting Presidential Candidates

On
11 August 2007, Sierra Leone
will have its second democratic election after the ending of a decade long war.
Consequently on 7 August 2007 the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists
(SLAJ) and Democracy Sierra Leone (DSL) hosted the first ever debate between
Presidential candidates entitled ‘Building Our Growing Democracy’. The debate was hosted at Lagoonda in Freetown and broadcast
live on radio throughout the country. The Sierra Leone Court Monitoring
Programme (SLCMP) was privileged to be in the audience at this momentous
occasion.

New Registrar and Deputy Registrar Appointed to the Special Court.

On Friday, 20 July 2007, the Special Court for Sierra Leone
announced the appointments of a new Registrar and Deputy Registrar. The Court’s new Registrar, Mr. Herman von
Hebel, served as Deputy Registrar of the Court from July 2006 until March 2007,
when he was named Acting Registrar.
