The Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone (HRCSL) on Friday 1st July issued a press release in which the Commission drew the attention of the general public to the alleged assault on Mr. Tony Samuel Ojeah, Distribution Manager of Guma Valley Water Company Limited by personnel of the National Fire Force leading to his death on 30th May 2007. The Commission considers this a violation of the victim’s right to “life, liberty, security of person, the enjoyment of property and protection of law” pursuant to Section 15 of the Constitution of Sierra Leone 1991.

This is one of the first issues to be addressed by the HRCSL since its inauguration in December last year. The Sierra Leone Court Monitoring Programme (SLCMP), in the spirit of Article 3 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which states that “Everyone has the right to life, liberty, and security of person”, wishes to join the HRCSL in condemning this act of human right violation.

The SLCMP therefore urges the authorities concerned to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice speedily. The SLCMP also wishes to laud the efforts of the Sierra Leone Police in arresting five of the alleged perpetrators as reported by UN Radio this morning in its Tea Break news programme.
